80's Were the Best!

All you ever wanted to know about the best decade ever

The ’80s Takes Over 2013 Primetime Television

While riding the subway home tonight after a long day at work, I glanced up at some of the advertisements that grace the stationary riders and realized a “resurgence” of sorts. Two of my favorite ’80s stars are now back on TV in Primetime spots this year. Following this great article by Hollywood.com, I decided to research all of the connections between the greatest decade ever and current pop culture. Below is a station-by-station review of how the ’80s are invading your TV set.

ABC (http://abc.go.com/shows)

Marvel – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Television show based off comic book characters popularized in the ’80s.

The Goldbergs

This show appears to be about a family during the 1980s and the trials and tribulations they went through in a “simpler” era.

Back in the Game

Show Link: http://abc.go.com/shows/back-in-the-game

Television show about a woman who a bumpy life and moves in with her father, played by James Caan. James was huge in the 1970s and ’80s, for much more than his lead role in The Godfather.

NBC (http://www.nbc.com/shows/)

The Michael J. Fox Show

Who could forget one of the princes of the 1980s, who between the Back to the Future saga which made him an international star and his lovable role on Family Ties was one of the top actors of the decade.

Betty White’s Off Their Rockers

Betty White, probably the world’s most popular nonagenarian, is back and better than ever. The former Golden Girl is holding nothing back and giving her all in a showing that senior citizens can have just as much – if not more – fun than the rest of us.

CBS (http://www.cbs.com/shows)

The Crazy Ones

How could any discussion about the 1980s be complete without the one and only Robin Williams. Good Morning Vietnam, Mork and Mindy, and Dead Poets Society are only a few of his masterpieces completed in the ’80s. Now Robin is back on Primetime with a show about “a larger-than-life advertising genius whose unorthodox methods and unpredictable behavior would get him fired… if he weren’t the boss”.

About Vegas

Show Link: http://www.cbs.com/shows/vegas/about/

About Vegas stars two big-name actors whose acting careers took off in the ’80s, Dennis Quaid and Michael┬áChiklis. The show is about a lawman (Quaid) who is the Sheriff of Las Vegas, and has to deal with the Mob, headed by┬áChiklis. I’ve only seen it once but definitely worth watching again.

The 80’s Are Back? We Never Left!

Back to the Future Movie ImageI found a very interesting article this morning while eating my Lucky Charms listening to April Wine – Just Between You and Me, about how many of our favorite musicians and actors from the 80’s are back. The article, titled 20 Stars From The 1980s Who Are Making Comebacks, has a pretty good slideshow showcasing a couple 80’s stars that are now making comebacks. Of the celebrities mentioned, my favorite to see was Michael J Fox. The lovable Marty McFly from the Back to the Future series now is partaking in a sitcom on NBC that is “loosely based on his own life as a father battling Parkinson’s”. Although I was still quite young when the first Back to the Future came out, I remember watching the video tapes vividly and enjoying learning a bit about history as he and Doc traveled through time. I also went through a period where I wanted to find and drive a Delorean car just to see if I could go fast enough to go back in myself.

As we stated when we first created this site, we want to highlight how the 80’s are just as big of a part of our daily lives now as they were 30 years ago. This is just one more example of how music, movies, and TV really were enriched by those from our era.
