Tonight NYC is not going to know what hit it when the world famous Hiro Ballroom hosts a retomania party for the ages. From the advertisement on LivingSocial‘s page, “Spin round (right round) like a record for one last time at this turning-Japanese-inspired space—with its paper lanterns and state-of-the-art sound, video, and lighting—which will be our love shack for the evening. As we bust a move on the dance floor, celebrate good times with ’80s-themed drink specials, a costume contest with prizes (we’ll provide the neon sunglasses, but it’s BYO raspberry beret)—and, of course, the best dance tunes this side of Planet Rock.”

It is rumored that Ferris Bueller will be in a commercial during the game, either as a Honda car opener or potentially a sequel. We are very excited at the prospect of a part II to this timeless classic. More information to follow in the coming days, but here is a glimpse of the commercial so far, very ambiguous indeed…

Ooooooooh Yeah – A Tribute to Macho Man

You knew we had to do it. Just like the countless other 80′s tribute websites on the web, we felt it just wouldn’t be right without atleast a post to one of the greatest WWF wrestlers of all time, and another reason we never left our TV sets back in the 80s. Macho Man Randy Savage died last week in a tragic car accident, at the young age of 58. Sure we don’t want to bore you with all the little facts, those that you could find at Wikipedia, but pay a tribute to one of our favorite wrestlers and flashiest dressers of the decade. Macho Man didn’t just ascent in the 80′s, Macho Man was the 80′s. From the clothes, style, profession, Macho Man entertained us like no other. From flying elbows, tag teams with Hogan, Warrior, and the always-beautiful Miss Elizabeth, every time Macho took the ring, we watched and were amazed.

I remember one of the first times watching Macho Man on WWF, on a Saturday morning wrestling program. His crazy antics, voice, and dress made him immediately a house favorite, and by the time he teamed up with Hulk Hogan as part of the “Mega Powers” team. It was a great time to be a fan, as Macho and Hulk were the two best in the WWF. Then their breakup. Then back together. Great times. It is now being circled that Hulk took the death especially hard, as he and Macho had recently began to reconnect and rekindle their friendship after many years apart.

After scouring the internet for related articles, it quickly became apparent that this gem of our favorite decade was well loved and respected throughout some of the largest and most popular sites. Even ESPN did a great article on him, and we wanted to share just a part of that here:

“For those first few WWF years, Savage simply couldn’t miss. He picked the best possible manager and feuded with the best possible people. His nickname doubled as the single best wrestling nickname of that decade unless you want to argue for “The Million Dollar Man.” His entrance music (“Pomp and Circumstance”) was obviously a better choice than the Village People’s “Macho Man,” but kudos to him for making the right call. He wasn’t opposed to wrestling with his sunglasses on (a lost art, really), and his crazy beard/thinning hair/bandanna/sunglasses look shouldn’t have worked but always did. His interviews were phenomenally bizarre and undeniably entertaining, and, by the way, he might have been the first wrestler to refer to himself almost entirely in the third person. The Macho Man was like the Rickey Henderson of wrestling, right down to the fact that you never knew what the hell he was talking about…” – Bill Simmons, espn.com.

Finally, if words can’t say everything, we found a great Youtube video paying tribute to this great warrior. Macho Man will forever be missed by all those who knew him and his ability, personality, and mannerisms. Will he go down as the greatest all time wrestler? Maybe not. Was he the first to dress lavishly infront of thousands of people and take a beating? Certainly not. Was there no other wrestler or athlete that combined everything he did into one package that could headline a main event? OOOOOOOOOOOH Yeah Brother!

Poor Sony… You’ve been all over the news lately and not in a good way. Well, what do you expect? A hacker attacks your PlayStation Network and gains access to over a 100 million users information. Eeek! PR Daily thinks that you should take the advice of Nelson, an 80s rock group, that coined the phrase “After the Rain.” Nelson’s #1 hit song was great publicity for them and great advice for Sony. Weather the storm…

We Really Are Living in the 80s!

Something that we’ve long said on this site – the 80′s were not then, but more of NOW. A recent article I read in DC completed a full study on the similarities we share now in the 2000′s and 2010′s with the 80′s. Definitely worth the read. Here are some excerpts from the full Washington Post Article :

…the 1980s are our very own Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game: Everything defining today’s politics seems connected to that decade…

…In the 1980s, children didn’t see “E.T.” just in a movie theater — we saw that anti-government parable about kids fleeing faceless, jack-booted federal agents in our Atari cassettes, Happy Meals, board games, action-figure sets and Reese’s Pieces wrappers…

…History may not have ended, but we are stuck in a loop, our Walkmen endlessly rewinding and restarting the soundtrack to a movie we’ve seen too many times. It’s time to turn it off — or at least to recognize that it’s still playing…

Hey 80s lovers! Sorry, we’ve been MIA. Tons of stuff going on over here. I saw this article, and I just had to post it. What better way to get back on track then with an 80s obsession. Owerko explains in a NY Times article why and how he started his collection of boomboxes. His interest grew into a book, “The Boombox Project: The Machines, the Music, and the Urban Underground,” published last month by Abrams Image. “It features his lovingly detailed close-up photographs of vintage portable stereos, as well as commentary by Spike Lee, L L Cool J and members of the Beastie Boys and the Fugees about the role the devices played in New York’s street culture from the late 1970s to the mid-’80s.”
