The ’80s: The Decade That Made Us – NatGeo

Hey 80’s Fanatics! Looks like the mainstream media is finally catching up to what we’ve known for years – the 80’s was the decade of our generation, probably the last 2 or 3 generations. So much so that National Geographic is doing a full 3-day mini series totally attributed to, you guessed it, the 1980s. Join Rob Lowe on a multi-part mini series touching all aspects of retromania – and what made us today. Be sure to check out their site for the low down on when to set your DVRs, drop off your kids, and start the popcorn makers. This is something you will not want to miss!

Can you do “The Cube” ?

Road House : The Greatest B Movie Ever Made

I just had the opportunity to watch the greatest 80’s film you may never have heard of, Road House, starring Patrick Swayze. If you’ve never had the chance to see this film, go rent it this weekend. Wow, that makes me sound dated; go stream/Hulu/NetFlix it. Actually I dont think it’s on Netflix now, so you’ll need to try another way. Anyway – what an awesome film. The “Double Deuce” bar is looking for a new cooler (how long has it been since you heard “cooler” for bouncer?), and the Swayze is the man they want. Patrick trades his Dirty Dancing shoes for a pair of parachute pants and a bad attitude, kicking butt in the name of righteous patrons. The movie is chalk-full of great hairdo’s, retro clothes, phrases, and special effects. Something not to miss the next Saturday you find yourself at home!

The 80’s Are Back? We Never Left!

Back to the Future Movie ImageI found a very interesting article this morning while eating my Lucky Charms listening to April Wine – Just Between You and Me, about how many of our favorite musicians and actors from the 80’s are back. The article, titled 20 Stars From The 1980s Who Are Making Comebacks, has a pretty good slideshow showcasing a couple 80’s stars that are now making comebacks. Of the celebrities mentioned, my favorite to see was Michael J Fox. The lovable Marty McFly from the Back to the Future series now is partaking in a sitcom on NBC that is “loosely based on his own life as a father battling Parkinson’s”. Although I was still quite young when the first Back to the Future came out, I remember watching the video tapes vividly and enjoying learning a bit about history as he and Doc traveled through time. I also went through a period where I wanted to find and drive a Delorean car just to see if I could go fast enough to go back in myself.

As we stated when we first created this site, we want to highlight how the 80’s are just as big of a part of our daily lives now as they were 30 years ago. This is just one more example of how music, movies, and TV really were enriched by those from our era.

The Gang’s All Here – Expendables 2 is Coming

Sly Stalone and the gang are ready to take on the world agai

Stalone. Statham. Willis. Li. Norris. Lundgren.Van Damme. Arnold. Sounds like the starting lineup for the 1980’s Dream Team of Movies.

Just when you thought this summer’s movie season couldn’t get any hotter (along with these record temps!) just around the corner is latest installment of the steroid-filled, action-packed, and explosion-covered drama of Expendables 2. Sly gets the team together for another round of heart-pumping and anti-climatic two-word phrases that will be the realest thing to Avengers since…well Expendables 1. From the IMDB excerpt:

“…Mr. Church reunites the Expendables for what should be an easy paycheck, but when one of their men is murdered on the job, their quest for revenge puts them deep in enemy territory and up against an unexpected threat….”

I dont’ know about you but I am seriously stoked about this next chapter in the Senior Stalone Saga. As a matter of fact, critics are already calling The Expendables Series his best multi-part movies (as a writer) since Rocky. I don’t know about that but we’ll have to see. We here at 80swerethebest.com will be sure to fill you in once this hits the big screen on how part 2 of “Great 80s action heros meet a few newcomers and kill bad guys” actually is. We know one thing is for sure, with this many stars, even if its bad it will appeal to every demographic group out there.

Ferris Bueller Is Back!?

We at 80swerethebest.com just caught wind of some major developments for the 2012 Super Bowl. It is rumored that Ferris Bueller will be in a commercial during the game, either as a Honda car opener or potentially a sequel. We are very excited at the prospect of a part II to this timeless classic. More information to follow in the coming days, but here is a glimpse of the commercial so far, very ambiguous indeed…
